Mary Ann Horton was the first child of Charles Horton & Sarah Holloway born November 18th, 1842 & christened February 12th, 1843 at Christ Church, West Bromwich.
On February 9th, 1848 Mary Ann’s father Charles was tragically killed in a violent explosion at the coal mine where he was working.
Mary Ann, her mother & younger sister could not be found in the 1851 census.
In 1861 Mary Ann was working as a domestic servant for William & Jane Corbett & family at Walsall Rd, Birchfield, Handsworth.
Mary Ann married Henry James Walters on June 4th, 1864 at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich. A witness at the wedding was Mary Ann’s step-father, Joseph Daniels. Henry was born c1842 in West Bromwich the son of Isaac Walters, a moulder.
In 1871 Mary Ann & Henry James were living at 44 Northside, Seaton, Cumberland where Henry was an iron worker. They had 3 children – Ada (6), Sarah Ann (4) & Mary Elizabeth (1 month).
In 1881 the family were still living in Seaton & Henry was now a steel roller. As well as Ada Sarah & Mary, they now had a son Henry J, aged 7.
The family appear to have emigrated to the United States in 1886. They came to live in Pennsylvania.
The 1910 census of USA shows Henry & Mary living at Franklin, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania & at this time Henry was a farmer. With them was a grandson, Frederick Renkin. This was the son of daughter Sarah Ann who had married Robert Frederick Renkin in 1888 in Allegheny, Pittsburgh. Son Henry, an electrician at the steel mill & his wife Ada (nee Seecombe) & their 3 children were living at Ward 17, Pittsburgh in 1910. Henry & Ada were still living in Pittsburgh in 1940.
By 1920 father Henry had died, & Mary Ann, now 77, was living with her daughter Ada & her husband Tom T Partleton & family at Mount Oliver, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Tom was a labourer at the steel mill.
